Do you find it embarrassing to smile and sometimes difficult to chew because of missing teeth? Or do you have some teeth with large fillings, or that are misshapen, cracked or badly damaged? Perhaps your teeth are shifting position because of missing teeth. Whatever the reason, if you’re feeling self-conscious, and you long for a healthy and attractive smile, then here at Plantation Dental Care, we can help.
One of the solutions we offer to rectify these issues is porcelain crowns. These restorations fit like a cap over the top of damaged teeth to protect them from further deterioration and to make them look more aesthetically pleasing. They are custom-made to look just like a natural tooth, and they are strong and resilient. Basically replacing the entire exterior of a damaged tooth right down to the gum, they’re an excellent choice to recreate the form and function of a damaged tooth. Porcelain crowns can also top dental implants. In addition, we use porcelain crowns to anchor dental bridges in the event that you have a missing tooth or teeth.
Porcelain crowns are bonded permanently to a particular tooth to improve its function and aesthetics. Placed over a prepared tooth, porcelain crowns need very little maintenance beyond regular brushing and flossing. Properly maintained, they should last for upwards of 15 years.
There are two types of porcelain crowns. All-ceramic crowns are mostly used for front teeth where the priority is aesthetics. For rear teeth, we may recommend precious metal crowns fused with porcelain which provide more strength.
On occasions, an all-ceramic bridge is used to replace a missing tooth or teeth. This consists of a false tooth or teeth made from porcelain which accompanies two porcelain crowns used to anchor the bridge at either end of the gap.
